Healthy Weight Loss Advice: What You Should Know About Hoodia

Are you being bombarded by email after email advertising some version of the Hoodia diet supplement? The claims these advertisers make make it seem like Hoodia is the answer to all of your weight loss questions.

But is it really? here’s a little info you might find interesting…

Hoodia comes from a cactus in Africa. The active weight loss “ingredient” in hoodia is a substance called P57, which supposedly acts as an appetite supplement. But, like many of the “weight loss products” on the market, very little research has been done to demonstrate just how effective this substance really is.

In fact, the lead researcher for Pfizer’s hoodia research team concluded that there were some potentially unwanted (dangerous?) effects on the liver and that “a lot more research needs to be done before it can earn approval from the FDA..Until safer formulations are developed, dieters should be wary of using it.”

In March, 2006 Consumer Reports concluded “This weight loss drug lacks the clinical evidence for the Consumer Reports experts to recommend this product”

And while the jury is still out on whether P57 is actually a true appetite suppressant, 80% of the various Hoodia supplements currently on the market were found to have only trace amounts, and in some cases none, of the P57 chemical.

From this information, it is probably safe to conclude that Hoodia probably isn’t the answer to your healthy weight loss questions.
